It seems to me that the historical run down was very interesting because it became very clear that you cannot look to history to give legitimacy to any one group. I don't care whether Jews have been in Israel or dominating there for a thousand years or five hundred years or fifteen hundred years. It is very clear that there were other groups there before, and there were other groups there since. You can't give legitimacy to any one group. What we should look for is peace and justice for the people who are there now. As far as justice is concerned it is very clear that both Israelis and Palestinians have been political footballs of other larger countries, Germany in one instance and England in another instance. Certainly it is important for Israel to survive because Israel became a haven for so many Jews and so many additional lives would have been lost had it not been for Israel. But I think when two people are fighting each other and they turn out to be political footballs of other countries, the point is to say come on, let's get together and talk to each other. We have both been unjustly treated and we must not become rivals as to who is the greater victim. The point is to start from here and make compromises.
As far as Jerusalem goes, I've been there. It rings many bells for whomever goes there. It seems to me that some sort of international regime should at least play a role in part of the city, it cannot just be all Jewish or all Moslem or Arab or what have you.
